DO NOT DOUBT THE POWER OF THE MUSTACHE

Six weeks.
Thirty-one men, one woman, and one toddler.
$15,000.
One giant flock of some mean lookin’ mustaches.

The Second Annual Mustache-a-Thon – Son of ‘Stache has drawn to a close, the last hours a veritable whirlwind of whiskers, donations, and passionate mustache devotion. Mustache HQ was hit – and hit hard – by a maelstrom of last-minute donations and a Mustache Wrap Party to end all wrap parties.

Now that we’ve had a chance to catch our breath, count the donations, and measure the event’s Selleckiness, we have some very thrilling information to impart.

The question dangling on everyone’s mustache is “Did we meet our $15,000 goal?”

I am happy to report that, as of Monday, 10-09-07, we have raised:

$15,200

including cash in hand, employer matching, and outstanding pledges! That’s $5,200 more than last year. We received more individual donations and media interest than last year – the word definitely spread like a bad Fu Manchu.

Thank you to all of our donors, mustache growers, and mustache teammates. We couldn’t have done it without you.

If you haven’t yet made a donation – never fear! We will continue to accept donations until we are sure that mustaches have gained a significant foothold in the world of fundraising.

Mustache Wrap Party!

A Sellecktion of delicious mustache themed food! Yumm!

Special suprise guest, The Stranger's Party Crasher.

Our hero.

Jessixa draws Brad Wilke and his spectacular mustache.

Pin the Mustache on Tom Selleck - a game best left to adults.

The rockin' sounds of C'mon C'mon and fellow mustacheer Sean Bates. See C'mon C'mon for yourself on October 27th, at Chop Suey for Hallowqueen - A Night of Queen Covers. Check out www.chopsuey.com or http://www.myspace.com/cmoncmonband for more info

The Mustache Wrap Party featured “Pin the ‘Stache on Tom Selleck” (congrats to master pinner Sam Smith), mustache caricatures by Jessixa, an assortment of mustache movies including “Three Men and a Baby,” “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” and “Smokey and the Bandit," mustache-themed food, the fine music of C'mon C'mon, a Mustache Farmers Power Point presentation, and an awards ceremony that made the Oscars look like the Daytime Emmys.

Awards included:

BEST LITTLE MUSTACHE THAT COULD – Blaire Notrica

BEST CELEBRITY MUSTACHE (four-way tie)

  • Doug Woodbury (Skynard roadie and Hulk Hulgan)
  • Drew Johnson (William Faulkner)
  • Ben Busby-Collins (Super Mario and Eric Estrada)
  • Christopher Morris (Vincent Price and Errol Flynn)

BEST OVERALL MUSTACHE – Jon Allred

MOST MONEY RAISED (Cash in hand) – Tim Lloyd and Julia Dekovich - $1085!

In addition to raising the most money and growing the best mustache, this year’s farmers were attempting to raise more money than Mr. Geoduck. Despite being a fictional character, and a rather unpleasant one at that, he managed to raise $1014. The two growers to raise more (cash in-hand) were Brock Grubb ($1050) and Tim Lloyd.

Special thanks to: Mustache Mistress Rebecca Brinson, Mustache Photographer Ben Blum, Leigh Bezezekoff (who was fundraising for five mustache farmers), and our sponsors The Pig ‘N’ Whistle, Full Sail, Scarecrow Video, Archie McPhee, and Ballard Organics.

(From left to right) Mustache Mistress Rebecca Brinson, Best Celebrity Look-a-Like Doug Woodbury, Best Overall Mustache Jon Allred, Best Little Mustache That Could Blaire Notrica, and Mustache HQ Secret Agent Justin Allan.
Mustache HQ reviews and approves Best Overall Mustache winner Jon Allred.

The Mustache Madness Just Doesn’t Stop!

In early December, 826 Seattle will benefit from the generosity of the organizers of the Second Annual Mustache Bash. Last year’s bash was held at the Rendezvous in Belltown, though details about this year’s bash are still forthcoming. Keep your eyes trained to this spot for more information – and start your mustaches a-growing now. As the farmers of the A-Thon will tell you, a well-coiffed ‘stache takes a fair amount of time and devotion.

We are down to the last three days of the Second Annual Mustache-A-Thon – Son of ‘Stache. The sense of relief is palpable, the excitement electric in the air. Donations are rolling in faster than we can count!

On October 4th, at 4 PM, 826 Seattle Executive Director Teri Hein and Mustache Farmer Brad Wilke will be on Komo 4 News, talking about the Mustache-A-Thon. Look for it!

To all Mustache Farmers, Sponsors, Donors, Cheerleaders, and Well-Wishers:
Thank you!
Thank you for leasing us your upper lip!
Thank you for the donations!
Thank you for your humor, excitement and Selleckiness!

UPDATE: As of 2:30 PM on October 4, we passed the $10,000 mark.

Yes – you read that right - $10,000. The power of the ‘stache must not be underestimated.

A curious thing has occurred over the past six weeks. I dream about mustaches. I find myself mining the web for images of mustaches. I see celebrities with mustaches and I admire their daring fashion sense and long to be like them. I peruse the men’s grooming section of the drug store longer than I used to.

I think I have become a fan of mustaches.

I see mustaches everywhere, and often compare the ‘staches of my friends with the ‘staches on TV. Lo’ and behold, several of our Mustache Farmers look curiously like famous men. With mustaches.

Coincidence? Or MUSTACHES SEPARATED AT BIRTH?

The penultimate mustache weigh-in of 2007 had a robust turnout! Mustaches and mustache farmers were everywhere, and over $300 in cash and check donations was added to the pot. As for 'stache recognition, Jon Allred's impressive, sweeping-up-at-the-edges mustache won "Best Mustache So Far" and he took home a bottle of neutral-colored mustache wax.

We have only one more weigh-in! We have passed $7,500, but we want $15,000! Can we do it? Yes!

Visitors to our fair blog, have you donated to a mustache yet? Your time is growing short (unlike the hairs on our farmers' faces) - best pick a mustache you like now, because before you know it, it'll be gone. To those who have donated to us thus far, THANK YOU! We are so grateful for your generosity. Tell all your friends, share the mustache love, and help us reach our goal!

Happy hairs!

The Mysterious Tom-Selleck-Mustache Folk Art Movement

We at Mustache HQ have long been fans of actor Tom Selleck. Our youth was spent watching Magnum PI and “Three Men and a Baby” always arouses in us warm paternal memories. But never in our wildest imaginations did we believe there would be a strong and mysterious art movement dedicated entirely to Tom’s mustache.

A cursory search of “Tom Selleck” and “mustache” on google’s image search reveals hundreds if not thousands of people paying pencil, pen, and paint tribute to the King of The Un-Ironic Mustache. Where these people come from and what drives them to create such tributes will remain a mystery.

Here is just a selection of the artwork discovered online.

This past week, we received an unexpected surprise in the Mustache HQ email in-box: a series of mustache photos that not only plays on the kitschy attraction of the ‘stache but brings to mind a plethora of head-scratching questions. Is this man a construction worker? A dancer? Where are his friends, the Indian and the cop? If he is at work, why is there wine on the top of the cupboard? If he is at home, where is his fridge?

We puzzled over these matters for some time, but decided in the end that Eric Delfel deserves a place of honor in this week’s Mustache Blog.

Lookin’ to support these mustacheers, howl along to “Shot Through the Heart”, and enjoy a Jell-O shot or two?

Head over to Magnolia’s Boxcar Ale House, Saturday, September 29th between 9PM and Midnight, for the first ever Mustache-A-roke! $2 Jell-O shots, karaoke, and more whisker madness than you can reasonably cram into a pub.

The Boxcar is located at 3407 W. Gilman Ave. in Magnolia (just a hop and a skip from 15th Ave. via Dravus).

Thanks to the generosity of Jen Koogler and Scott Rosen, we were able to offer two tickets to the LCD Soundsystem/Arcade Fire show to whoever had received the most money as of last week's weigh-in...and the honor went to Brock Grubb! Congratulations, Brock! Wear that mustache proudly at the show, and be sure to eye anyone else with a mustache (a non 826-'stache, anyway) with disdain...betcha they didn't earn their tickets through hard mustache fundraising work.

Speaking of, there are only TWO WEEKS left until our big mustache shindig (if this were a goatee contest, that would be a good place for a "chin-dig" pun, but alas...now is not the time or place), and thus the end of the Second Annual Mustache-a-Thon! Send out those pleading emails, ask your friends and coworkers for support in a wheedling voice...you know the drill.

It was another successful week for mustache farmers! We held our very first give-away this week, and while a hearty $1,000 pledge (woohoo!) had Team Brotherton-Cockburn in the lead for gifts and pledges, we are pragmatic folks at 826 Seattle; the new "Wholphin" DVD, courtesy of Alex Allred, went to the cash-in-hand leader, Blaire Notrica! Congrats, and good work, Blaire!

This week, regular photographer Ben Blum was otherwise indisposed and sent his sister Beth in his stead. She brought a cool camera and a freakin' awesome space themed backdrop. Ben, your job as Mustache Documentarian may be in jeopardy!

In other people-named-Ben news, brave farmer Ben Busby-Collins is also a professional soap maker and proprietor of Ballard Organics - Washington's first and only certified organic soap manufacturer. On Saturday, September 15th from 10-6, Ballard Organics is celebrating the opening of their very first store! Located under Cedars in the U-District at 50th and Brooklyn, all mustache fans are invited to pay them a visit and check out their 100% vegan, 100% spectacular collection of soaps and lotions. Check out www.ballardorganics.com for more information.

Hurray for mustache progress! Remember – the 2nd Annual Mustache-A-Thon ends on October 6th. That means only THREE MORE WEEKS to make donations to your favorite mustache farmer. We won’t mind a speck if you donate more than once.

Thanks to the support of mustache fans the world ‘round, we have just passed the $5000 mark. Thank you one and all!

At Bumbershoot, Justin stumbled across Burlesque of North America, a poster and print design company. Amongst their awesome posters (of which he purchased several), he found a pack of Moustache Bandanas – two bandanas imprinted with four different mustaches. Good for robbing banks or for those with ‘stache envy, these hankerstaches were a hit at the second weigh in!

Justin Allan - Hankerstache

Justin sporting one of the Burlesque Moustache Bandanas!

With a robust turnout of farmers and fundraisers, this week's weigh-in was durn good, just like the weather and the beer that accompanied it. Mustache things were discussed: we found that a bright flash on a camera can wash out newer upper-lip hairs that have not yet fully matured. This led to a "to dye or not to dye" query. Would taking the Just-For-Men to the 'stache be a bold step in embracing and celebrating your fundraising tool, or would it be cheating? Discuss.

After almost two weeks' of growth, civilians outside of the 826 universe are starting to notice our brave heroes' mustaches for what they are, rather than assuming they merely forgot to shave. Farmers reported that people often looked at their upper lips instead of their eyes when conversing - we'll give Seattleites the benefit of the doubt and attribute this to awe and inspiration, rather than coarse objectification (hel-lo, my eyes are up here!).

We always stoutly defend mustaches, of course - and we made new internet friends that do, too! Check out the American Mustache Institute ( http://www.americanmustacheinstitute.org) for all things 'stache, including the determination that Keith Hernandez has the top sports mustache of all time and a blog called "The Opinionated Mustache." AMI is all about bringing the mustache back to mainstream America, and seeing as they're headquartered in the stately shadow of St. Louis Arch - the world's largest mustache - we think they have a great start.

Elsewhere in the blogosphere, Farmer Brendan posted about his progress on your favorite blog and mine, the Stranger's Slog: http://slog.thestranger.com/2007/09/all_about_my_mustache. Hooray! If you found us through the Slog, and you can find a couple bucks in your budget between your Cap Hill rent and buying Bud Light out of a cooler at Pony, give us some love!

Other cookieduster news for the week: We brainstormed some pretty clever weekly names for Team Brotherton-Cockburn, but we can't tell you because their pictures wouldn't be as funny. Justin modeled his new mustache kerchiefs found at Bumbershoot (reversible! suitable for blondes AND brunettes!), temporarily obscuring his own beginnings of a wraparound. We also recruited 826’s new intern, Drew, to join in on the 'staching.

In closing, we'll leave you with another point of possible mustache contention that pries even deeper into our societal mores than the aforementioned dyeing question: To what extent should significant others have a say over their partners' facial hair? Is it something that must be decided as a couple or an individual? Would your political mustache shirt say, "My Face, My Choice!" OR "All Mustaches Deserve Two Loving Parents"...?

Josh at Metroblogging Seattle recently wrote about the 2007 Mustache-A-Thon! Read the blog HERE. Thank you Josh!

Some ‘staches were indistinguishable from the rest of the 5 o’clock shadows surrounding them, some where already loud and proud – regardless, all happily reported for mustache weigh-in duty. Highlights included onion rings, free Full Sail Amber Ale (thank you, Pig ‘n Whistle and Full Sail!), pool, and trying to remember the name of that one Steve Martin book (which bookshelf-checking revealed to be The Pleasure of My Company, not The Object of My Affection, which was as close as we came).

The most surprising moment was when some anonymous fellow came in to the Pig with an AMAZING brunette version of the mighty Hulk Hogan chin-framer, complete with aviator sunglasses. Several of us stared at him in awe – perhaps the first time a man with that style of mustache was the one creeped out in a bar, rather than the other way around.

Pledges and cash money were also collected, with the prize for Most Adorable and Inspirational Money Brought In going to follicle farmer Lucas, who got $1.73 from a toddler (!).

Keep up the great growing!

It Begins!

Like other 826 chapters in our great land, we in Seattle noticed that August 26th is a pretty handy day for 826-related activities.

While we didn't have a moonbounce like Valencia or Demetri Martin like NYC, we had a picnic shelter at Carkeek Park that would’ve made Thoreau proud: a stunning view of Puget Sound, Doug's marinated portobello caps, Jen's vegan coleslaw (secret ingredient – garlic aioli!), great weather, and a dessert-to-entree ratio of approximately 17:1.

8/26 marked our second-annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic and, new this year, Mustache Summer Camp!

Indeed, 30+ follicle farmers are off and growing in our Second Annual Mustache-a-Thon: the Son of 'Stache! Mustache kits (the contents of which are on this page) were distributed at our picnic and “Ask Me About My Mustache!” buttons were proudly pinned to t-shirts.

Fundraising plans were also discussed. Per esempio, participants – put a link to this blog in your email signature, offer to match the gifts (if you can) of penny-pinching friends and bring up your efforts in the presence of your rich dowager aunts as often as possible!

If you’re a visitor to this blog consider giving and check out the farmers' portraits! Ben from Ballard Organics, Dan from Neptune Coffee (826 Seattle’s new neighbor!) and Shawn from Scarecrow Video are all representin’ some pretty sweet local businesses – perhaps you will donate in honor of your favorite neighborhood enterprise! Or, perhaps you will put your money on the man you think will end the sixth week with the bushiest, bristliest cookie duster. Perhaps you will even out the playing field by giving equally to each farmer. Or perhaps you‘ll contribute to Mr. Geoduck's flagrantly wicked mustache. It is your choice as a discerning mustache supporter!

In closing, some words of advice to our hirsute heroes. A quick google of “food to grow hair” tells me that a diet rich in amino acids, B & E-vitamins, beta carotene, lean proteins and plenty of water assists in rapid hair growth.

Whether you want to go so far as to replace your face wash with Mane N' Tail shampoo is up to you.

Announcing the 2nd Annual 826 Seattle Mustache-a-thon – The Son of ‘Stache!

In 2006, a volunteer came to us with a rather kooky fundraising idea: Get a group of fearless men to put their naturally occurring facial follicles to good use, grow a very fashionable mustache, and gather financial support from family, friends, co-workers, ‘stache fans, and complete strangers. Though the twenty-six mustache farmers were a bit trepidacious at first, once the money started rolling in they embraced the event - and their mustaches - with gusto.

In less than six weeks, 826 Seattle, the brave mustache farmers, and their female fundraising teammates helped meet and exceed the $10,000 goal. Seattle Metropolitan wrote a follow-up article documenting the trials and tribulations of such lofty hirsute pursuits, and two other 826 chapters (Valencia and Michigan) were so taken by the idea they launched their own Mustache-A-Thons.

826 Seattle is all a-tingle to announce the second installment of this popular fundraiser – The 2nd Annual 826 Seattle Mustache-A-Thon–The Son of ‘Stache! With a new, loftier goal ($15,000), and new and exciting rules and contests, this year promises to be the break-out year for mustaches!

CALLING ONE, CALLING ALL

If you are a man with a cold, naked upper lip, or if your current soup strainer is in need of a dashing new do, and you have an itch to do your part to help young people write better, YOU ARE MUSTACHE-A-THON MATERIAL!

If you are a woman and want to push your upper lip fuzz to its questionable limits, if you are a woman who knows a man with available upper-lip real-estate, or if you are a woman who can champion the efforts of one of our mustache farmers, YOU ARE MUSTACHE-A-THON MATERIAL!

If you want to show fellow chapters 826 Valencia and 826 Michigan how a real man grows a handlebar, YOU ARE MUSTACHE-A-THON MATERIAL!

If you think mustaches are cool, kids are awesome, and writing is for winners, YOU ARE MUSTACHE-A-THON MATERIAL!

THE DETAILS

  • The 2nd Annual 826 Seattle Mustache-a-thon–Son of ‘Stache launches August 26th, at the volunteer picnic!
  • Mustache farmers and teammates meet weekly, every Wednesday, for photographs, grazing on mustache food (beer), and careful scientific mustache measuring and weighing!
  • Compete against the mysterious, nefarious Mr. Geoduck and win prizes!
  • Mutton chops encouraged! Goatees and beards strongly discouraged!
  • Gather Saturday, October 6th to revel in all things mustache, count the loot, and announce the Best in Show, Most Money Raised, and Best Celebrity Look-a-Like
  • Prizes donated by Archie McPhee and Co! Beer donated by Pig-N-Whistle!

You need not be physically present to participate! Simply commit to e-mailing us a weekly photo we can post on our mustache tracking website. We’ll have farmers sending us photos from overseas, while on cross-country road trips, and from recording studios.
